Every three years, the Schwingerkönig – in English referred to as King of Swiss Wrestling – is crowned at the Swiss Wrestling and Alpine Festival (Eidgenössische Schwing- und Älplerfest - ESAF). Here, the “bad guys,” that is how the Schwinger refer to themselves, compete in a duel. Schwingen refers to a variety of wrestling with its own set of rules, holds, and throws. Over the years, the sport has gained significant acceptance, developed massive support, and is considered one of the Swiss peculiarities.
